Landscape design is a deeply immersive practice, where individuals engage, perceive and experience spaces in diverse ways. As landscape designers, we craft spaces from our own perspectives, envisioning specific emotions and experiences for users. However, the actual user experience often diverges from our initial expectations. Then, how can we as designers begin to develop an understanding of these subjective experiences? This study aims to explore the concept of phenomenology as an “Objective study of subjective experiences” to understand the impact of sensory experiences on human perception of outdoor spaces. It delves into how individuals perceive, interpret, and emotionally engage with landscapes, using visual storytelling medium such as movies to aid in this exploration. It involves analysing cinematic elements like colour palette, visual framing, and lighting techniques, to offer insights for landscape designers in creating environments that evoke specific experiences. By leveraging movies’ ability to evoke emotions and manipulate spatial perceptions, the study aims to deepen understanding of how these visual components can help in shaping human perception and emotional responses in a physical landscape space.
