ECO WOVEN : Conserving Kadaiya’s Heritage and Ecosystems

The Kadaiya village exists as an island surrounded by expanding mangrove ecosystems, a result of dedicated conservation efforts by the community. However can village faces an increasing risk of displacement due to industrialization, which threatens both ecological and the cultural fabric. Addressing this, the project explores strategies to minimize displacement by strengthening the economic resilience of Kadaiya’s residents, particularly through their traditional craft of weaving coconut leaves - a skill deeply rooted in local heritage yet practiced less frequently today. The project envisions fostering economic benefits and job opportunities for Kadaiya’s people by creating platforms to showcase their craftsmanship and pass it on. The initiative aims to develop sustainable livelihoods tied to environmental stewardship by reinforcing the link between the community and ecology. Additionally, interventions along the namopath edge are proposed to enhance tourism, generating public interest in Kadaiya’s unique landscape and cultural practices, and ultimately supporting the village’s conservation efforts while celebrating its heritage.
