The Heritage Project

The Temporary Theatre Project in Sharjah redefines performance spaces by integrating flexibility and heritage sensitivity. Set in the 40 x 40 m courtyard of the historic Art Foundation of Sharjah, it aligns with the city’s cultural ambitions while preserving the site’s essence. A "theatre machine" transforms the courtyard into versatile configurations—transverse, arena, proscenium, and thrust—through simple mechanics housed in a basement stage workshop. Elevated walkways evoke a Shakespearean Globe Theatre while sloping roofs maintain the courtyard's character. Supporting artist residencies and workshops, the project bridges tradition and innovation, fostering public curiosity and enhancing Sharjah's role as a cultural district.
