For a young student of architecture, the question that arises often, is -
What is the Purpose of Architecture? In this Unit we will attempt to
analyse this query through the making of a ‘home’. This home is not your
typical house. This home is a physical realm that is a result of the primary
instinct of all animals - to shelter.
By exploring this notion of shelter the design studio will investigate a
variety of ‘shelters’ across the world and study its cause and capabilities.
How are spaces carved and created for accommodation? How are
comfort and conditions introduced? How does geography affect shelters?
What combinations make for a happy and healthy space?
Where is the real challenge - purpose - of architecture situated and how
do we go and address this? We aim to f ind this personal quest along with
the professional mandate that the architect requires to meaningfully
engage with and serve the society that they represent.
