INTENDED ORDINARINESS - REVISITING FRUGAL CONSTRUCTION

The studio started with decoding the Tribal Girls Hostel in Udvada, by Ar Pravina Mehta. Built in 1960, the building became an example of adapting frugal construction techniques into the architects' designs. With research and drawing the sectional perspective, the building was broken down and studied. The second module started with reading seminars that led to drawing up a research proposal. the proposal revisits the buildings under the chapter Looking Beyond, in the celebrated catalogue Vistara - Architecture of India to look into two aspects of the buildings selected by the authors: the correlation of construction of the buildings with the expressed simple and frugal design intentions, and to prove the durability and user friendliness of the buildings.
