The project focuses on building suitable capacities at different scales, without passing a threshold into a qualitatively different state within the fast changing environments of pols where the future is unpredictable.
A minimalist proposal is of restoring the Medi (structure above pol gate which traditionally belonged to the pol panchayat) to house the Civic Design Laboratory (CDL).
The CDL is part of a larger systemic infrastructure to feed into a continuous system with a performance-based approach that can exchange relevant information between systems, reflect on itself & enable the various other systems to function collectively while responding rapidly through shorter feedback loops.
Objective : to bring residents of the pol & city staff to convene + incubate + address civic challenges by aligning the institutional tools. In order to meet the objective the project also encompasses the following:
- Recommendations for Conservation & Development of Kakabaliya ni pol
- General Regulations and Guidelines for the built environment
- A Materials Guide to Conservation Approaches to educate the administration on the need, viability and principles of conservation so that they are able to document / survey / update government records
- A pilot project selecting properties of different heritage values and stakeholders to demonstrate approaches to conservation and development whilst allowing economic regeneration
