Exploring Vernacular Architecture

This studio focused on vernacular architecture, beginning with a detailed study of Ahmedabad’s Pol houses, known for their climate-responsive design and cultural richness. A site visit to Udvada followed, where we documented three heritage homes, analyzing their spatial organization, materials, and connection to local traditions. The culmination of the studio was designing a residence for one of the Udvada sites, integrating vernacular elements with modern requirements. This process emphasized the value of context, sustainability, and cultural heritage, showcasing how traditional architectural principles can inspire thoughtful, place-sensitive contemporary designs.
