What is a memorial? Who are we designing for? What does a memorial contain of? Are memorials really just for the dead? Can there not be a memorial to remind us of something that is present with us? How can we redefine the meaning of a memorial? With these questions in mind, I set off to develop a concept for the memorial design. Every memorial has a message that is conveyed to the people. My main message to be conveyed through the memorial was to rejuvanate lost connections of people with nature which is being forgotten now. What better way than to build a memorial on one of the ‘scars’ of mother nature and highlighting the damage done ? Quarry sites being one of the most deepest scars on mother nature, the site chosen was Kennecott Copper Mines, one of the largest and deepest mining sites locatd in the US.
