Bindu : Degentrifying Talavadi

Rapid urbanization has led to changing land use around many lakes. If the community around it is unable to establish a sense of belonging with the lake then it often leads to issues such as negligence and abandonment. These in terms lead to problems such as dumping waste, filling in of the lake and urban flooding. Further the lakes which are developed do not sit well with the context. The typical idea of lake edge design tends to exclude a response to its surrounding context leading to gentrification of the water body. The project aims at linking the lake systems in order to mitigate the quantitative issues. It also aims at re-establishing the dependency and connection of the water body with people through introduction of various community gathering spaces, programmatic interventions and reimagination of the lake as the focal point. The design framework will allow the Nikol method of degentrification to be looked at as a case for development of talavadi across Ahmedabad.

First Impression : The first impression captures shifting land textures from north to south, reflecting changes in land use, water quality, soil, and contamination.

Siting : Building on the established vision, the site selection process was guided by identifying key areas of concern. Sites were chosen based on their relevance to these concerns and their potential for effective intervention.

Analysis : The study area was analysed based on the existing stream network. Issues were identified, and a concept was developed to address them effectively.

Strategic Master Plan : The strategic master plan unifies the lakes into a system, highlighting each lake's unique identity. Together, they serve as focal points, or Bindu, for the surrounding community.

Water Calculation : The calculations aim to assess the quantitative water issues on-site and analyse how the proposed design mitigates them.

Master Plan : The master plan has been developed to address both the quantitative water issues and community engagement.

Flux : To evaluate the design's resilience, the selected window is tested across all seasons.

Conclusion : The design framework will allow the Nikol method of degentrification to be looked at as a case for development of talavadi across Ahmedabad.
