Urban transitions in semi-arid regions like Ahmedabad have a profound impact on ecologically sensitive areas, leading to ecosystem loss, water management challenges, and declining groundwater levels. Poor planning of permeability and impervious surfaces exacerbates surface runoff, reducing the site’s natural water retention capacity. This project proposes a framework integrating core town planning principles with innovative green and blue infrastructure strategies. The framework focuses on decentralized water systems, the preservation of ecological character, and the creation of climate-adaptive urban environments. Strategically planned open spaces, derived from the site’s intangible values, are transformed into multifunctional public realms that balance ecological and social needs, enhance water management, promote biodiversity, and support community well-being. These thoughtfully designed open spaces also unlock diverse opportunities for adjacent land uses, aligning with sustainable urban development goals. By encouraging harmony between urban growth and natural systems, the project offers a resilient habitat model for semi-arid regions facing rapid urbanization.
