Halophyte Cultivation Center

A workshop to repair and maintain the degrading khazan landscape along with the quarantine grounds that help reduce the salinity of the soil. The program aims to heal the degrading landscape through cultivation of halophytic plant species that help address the issue of salinity in the Khazan ecosystem. Halophytes are salt tolerant plants that naturally absorb the excessive salts from the soil over time and revitalize the soil for agriculture. As a part of it mangroves, a local plant species that thrives in the region, are cultivated in bamboo pots. There are experimental beds where different halophytic plant species are grown and studied for the same purpose. There will be growing beds where the plant saplings are cultivated and then distributed to the community as per the requirements. Additionally, Salicornia, a species that grows in saline lands, is also cultivated under controlled conditions to cater a value added salt production unit. This plant is used for the production of a type of salt known as “Green salt”. A dispatch area has been provided from where the produce is transported to the required places and for the intake of raw materials for efficient mobility.
