In this semester’s studio project, we explored the essence of craft through three distinct scales, each offering unique insights into the lives of artisans. We began with a personal exploration of the craftsman’s life, understanding how their craft shapes their identity and daily existence. This was followed by a journey to Gundiyali Kutch, where we observed how craft is passed down through generations, fostering community and preserving tradition. Our final stop was Himachal Pradesh, where we studied how local materials and the environment influence craft techniques, which laid the foundation for our graphic novel. Through these experiences, we deepened our understanding of craft, not only as a skill but as a cultural and spiritual practice. We sought to visualize this understanding through illustrations, creating a narrative that connects the personal, communal, and cultural dimensions of craft. The project allowed us to portray how craftsmanship transcends technique, capturing the emotional and cultural significance of the artisans’ work.
