Ahmadabad domestic airport should reflect the identity of city i.e. khadi which originates from Gandhian era. The design is centered around attributes that khadi material has like wrap-weft, openness, purity, earthy, minimal, simplicity, peaceful and porosity. These attributes are reflected by different means throughout the design i.e. space-planning, material palate, fenestration and space making elements . This design revolves around two major design tools: an open courtyard in the center and to create an invisible wall between arrival and departure areas by means of water body, water body here also serves the purpose of navigating a passenger through the space. Landscape elements are added in the space which helps to calm down anxiety of passengers and provide a calm atmosphere. The elements in space are designed keeping in mind minimal and earthy nature of khadi material, khadi fabric with metal frames are added wherever required as signage element or fenestration. Overall space is designed such that it creates subtle ambiance with landscape, water falling on pebbles and allowing natural light through skylight in central spine.
