Goa being on the western coast of India is subjected to heavy rainfall and hot and humid climate. The locally available stone is Laterite and is porous in nature, in which basilica and other monuments in Old Goa are built with. The rising water table in the ground, proximity to sea water, salt ingress in from the ground for the porous laterite-are the key factors which affect the healthy structural stability of Basilica which is situated on the comparatively lower-level ground from the adjoining monuments on the mount.
