Furniture for public spaces- Educational Institutions

Within the chaotic and hectic schedule of a college, student breaks are very essential. It is with these breaks that a student is able to relax and refresh their minds. I have selected the outdoor cafeteria as my focus as I believe that as area the outdoor cafeteria should aid in the relaxing and refreshing of student’s minds. Research indicates that these green spaces not only have an impact on people physically but mentally as well. As one interacts with nature even by being surrounded by it there a shift has been seen in terms of stress levels, depression as well as heart conditions and blood pressure. With my focus being the outdoor cafeteria, I intend to design a furniture system which not only engages the students but also connect them with nature. The design seeks to accommodate different groups of people 2-4 or 4-6 sized, whether they are eating, sitting, working on their laptop or just reading. As the furniture will be in use not only throughout the semester but throughout the year as well by students, teachers, cleaning staff as well as any passer-by alike it should not only be robust enough to handle the elements but it should also support various informal and relaxing seating postures.
