The Language of Space - Library at Premabhai Hall

Argument: “Efficiency in production and ease of installation can be achieved only through Modularity” Modularity is defined as “an approach in which a system is subdivided into smaller parts called Modules which are independently created and then are used in different systems”. It enables reusability, promotes flexibility and minimizes wastage of resources.Program Brief & Concept: Constructed in 1956, Premabhai Hall is no less than an ancient sculpture. Designed as a theatre by BV Doshi, it closed down in 1997 due to financial issues. It is set in the old part of city overlooking historical buildings with a central plaza. It is here that the public library is proposed. The skylights are ideal for distributing daylight into the space so the user is connected to the outdoors. It has an old-world charm which compliments the experience of the library. The coldness of the exposed concrete shell provides the perfect contrast to the warmth of the wooden shelves.
