ProgramThe existing program of the academy provides a platform to the young and veteran artists a platform to showcase their work. Since the core program is to develop a cultural center, I have designed the new Amdavad Haat. A place for the upliftment of the local craft and artisans by providing them a platform to showcase their work. It will also provide ample opportunities to the young entrepreneurs interested in crafts and willing to collaborate with these artisans. They will be exposed to new techniques in a digital fabrication lab and the library. Design Concept Designing a Haat has certain pre-conceived notions, the first thing that comes to our mind is traditional ethnic interiors that create spaces complementing the program. The idea here was to take one radical stand and break this notion. I have tried taking futuristic take towards my spaces as that one radical move. Why Futuristic? The reason behind using such a contradicting design method was to provide a strong backdrop to the products being displayed, so that they get more highlighted. The material palette of the spaces is neutral/muted in order to achieve the same. Another major reason behind the decision was that a futuristic design might attract a whole new generation that usually remains cut off from such places/activities. This sort of a design according to me can cater to the interests of all the age groups and hence lead to more and more exposure of the craft, the artisans, leading to more collaborations and hence achieving the main goal of uplifting the local crafts.
