The proposed project reimagines Gandhi Memorial Hall in Delhi as a Material Library—a curated space dedicated to the exploration and appreciation of interior materials such as metal, wood, glass, fabric, and tiles, aiming to display these elements not only as functional components but as vehicles of ornamentation, inviting visitors to explore the expressive potential of materials in architecture and design. Ornamentation in this context enriches the functional appeal of the space while providing an educational narrative around materiality. By showcasing the textures, finishes, and interactions of different materials, the library will immerse visitors in the craftsmanship, cultural relevance, and versatility that materials bring to interior design. The hall’s historic architecture will be enhanced through carefully integrated displays and installations, transforming the space into an evolving, interactive dialogue between traditional and contemporary design. Through dynamic layouts, lighting, and layered compositions, the Material Library will provide a multisensory experience that encourages visitors to engage with materials in new ways. Ornamentation here is not merely decorative; it’s a means of storytelling that deepens the visitor’s understanding of each material’s role in shaping environments. Ultimately, the project aims to inspire designers, architects, and the public to appreciate and innovate with materials, bridging the gap between functionality and artistic expression within the iconic setting of Gandhi Memorial Hall.
