THE HERITAGE CONSERVATION CENTRE

CONTEXT  A) Location :- The site which consists a colonial building and Vaav is located in the old city near Saraspur bus station and Darwaja (Gate). Initially, there were five step wells before 1723 in that area. So, later on the Vaav which was also known as Amritavarshini Vaav adopted a name “Panchkua ni Vaav”. The Vaav was famous for its L-shape and simple design. In, 1969 it was declared as a protected monument and then later in 1999 it was started for conserving it.
 B) Mapping :- As we all know old city is always chaotic with vehicles, traffic, vendors and people rushing here and there in narrow streets and foot path. There are permanent and mainly temporary shops in the front yard of the colonial building till Darwaja as well as in the surroundings of Vaav. While going through all of these daily, I felt that the importance of the heritage near the area as well as in the old city is lost or demolish somewhere. Some of the people living nearby were unaware of the existence of Vaav. So, the right step to take was to bring the essence of our heritage and culture back in today’s world.

PROGRAMME:- The program took birth from the thoughts of people and continued further to change them. The main intent of the design is to connect today’s generation with heritage roots and values. So, the design was processed with the intention of bringing the essence, thoughts, ways of living of our heritage back in today’s living. The design and program of Panchkua ni Vav and colonial building in old city is to bring adaptive reuse program of Heritage Conservation Centre which depicts the internal connection. The internal walls describe how life style, values, manners are directly connected to things passed on from years to years till today. The scripts and sculptures preserved and conserved in the space created inside the colonial building follows the same grid of outer walls which has a specific angle. This shows the building follows the program itself by not ruining or changing the existing one but carrying it forward to built or cultivate something new with same roots with in it. Displaying the whole process is further carried in Vaav with an entrance between building and Vaav. This shows that displaying the heritage works are equally important as to preserve and conserve them.
