The Barrier Within : A Theatrical Illusion

The stage aims to use barriers with contradictory meanings as a lens for the text ‘Metamorphosis’ by Franz Kafka, to create a dynamic, immersive theater experience. The barriers symbolize confinement and openness, offering a sense of transparency and secrecy in the play. The radial grid aims to form intersections of contrasting ideas or paths, becoming the junctions, where characters confront dilemmas or differing viewpoints. Multi-level viewing engages the audience from varied vantage points, and interactive pathways allow actors to navigate spaces that reflect themes of conflict, transformation, and intersecting ideas. The use of open frameworks and solid walls creates a contrast between transparency and opaqueness, allowing certain areas to be visible while others are obscured, enabling actors to perform scenes where characters are “hidden in plain sight” or appear isolated yet still connected to the larger environment.
