Drainage System Management- Managing of Railway Stations

The main aim of the Urban Management Foundation Studio is to learn about Managing the Railway Station in terms of facilities, utilities, and services. Having a thorough understanding of the management of the station, proposals were made on the areas for improvement to make Ahmedabad Junction one of the finest stations in India.

Under managing of Railway Station, Managing of Drainage System is very necessary as it directly affects the passengers in appearance, odour and also has its own health effects.

In Ahmedabad Junction, there are two lines of drainage system, the Sewer line and the Storm water line. Though these lines are separated at source, they get mixed into the same man hole and end up in the AMC sewer.

The observations on the site was classified into three, 1. Design Consideration, 2. Civil Maintenance, 3. Drainage Network. In DESIGN CONSIDERATION, Absence of drainage system in parking and Absence of Roof gutters were observed.

In CIVIL MAINTENANCE, Tampered storm water lines, Solid waste in the gutter lines and pot holes in parking were observed. The final result of these were stagnation.

In DESIGN NETWORK, Mixing of storm water and sewer water in the same manhole, mixing of rain water into the sewer.

It was observed that the common effect of all the three parameters was "Stagnation". Stagnation has its own effects.

The focus of my proposal was based on two main factors, 1. Removing the possibilities of stagnation. 2. Conserve rain water. Because of the absence of storm water drainage in Parking, Bio retention Cells act as a drainage for storm water enhancing ground water and aesthetics.

For the Bio retention to work efficiently, there should be no stagnation. Hence the potholes are to be repaired.

To conserve rain water, Recharge bore wells are used, which conserves the rain water and also used by the railways.

To collect the rain water, the quality of the rain water should be maintained. Hence the quality of the fixtures should be checked. Hence the focus of my proposal has been satisfied by two long term and two short term proposals.
