Focusing on solid waste management in Kheda municipality, a tier C city with its distinctive characteristics, the project delves into a challenging scenario. Despite ranking thirteenth among all Nagarpalikas in Gujarat in the Swachh Survekshan report, Kheda presents a visually littered environment, marked by numerous Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) and informal dumping grounds. Waste clogs not only drainage channels but also occupies open spaces. To comprehend the existing state of municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in Kheda, the project undertook assessments of current scenarios, policy analysis, bench marking of best practices, examination of case studies from various cities, and engagement with stakeholders.
Due to inefficient doorstep collection and the absence of bin schedules, informal waste patches have proliferated across vacant lots, water bodies, and streets. To address this, it is recommended to clean existing patches and implement measures such as procuring bins and establishing collection schedules. Additionally, it is proposed to explore waste recovery for revenue generation to enhance financial capacity and efficiency.
