Planning for “SPONGE” Streets

Ahmadabad grapples with urban flooding due to rapid urbanization, poor drainage, and intense rainfall. While rainy days decrease, rainfall intensity rises, causing water logging in city spaces, especially vulnerable urban streets. With only 33% storm water drainage coverage at 25mm/hr capacity, it's insufficient. To combat this crisis, Ahmadabad needs "sponge streets" – a project proposal to enhance storm water drainage. This includes problem identification, site selection criteria, demonstrations, cost estimations, and implementation phases. Sponge streets aim to alleviate flooding issues by improving drainage capacity and mitigating water logging, essential for Ahmadabad's urban resilience.
