In Between Waves: Making of an Adaptive Ecotone

"In Between Waves: Making of an Adaptive Ecotone' is set in 2070 where with increasing sea levels, 17% of Mumbai's shoreline is completely submerged in the ocean. With the rise in sea level and adverse climate change, increased prevalence of tropical cyclones is predicted for the future. The project looks in detail at developing a design intervention to address the coastal damage caused due to these events. Drawing idea from coastal biological sys tems of mangrove forests that naturally provide effective wave attenuation services, the project aims to design an adaptive floating settlement along the shoreline of Versova area in West Andheri, Mumbai. 
Through data on predicted wave speed and experiments at site level, a strategy of arrangement is derived to maximize wave attenuation along the site shoreline. Further, at built typology level, the project works towards providing a conducive living environment for the residents of the floating settlements where the local fishing industry can sustain and thrive as a livelihood. This is done through developing different building typologies derived from the spatial and social logics of Versova fishing village.
