Rejuvenating Talav (Lake) - Manav talav (Thaltej)

The design proposal tries to balance the chaos and create harmony between nature and human. It also looks through the perspective of accessibility, visibility, and aesthetics to give/enhance the experience of users. It starts with the relocation of the slum near Zydus hospital as per the TP scheme. Relocation itself is a debatable topic but when it comes to serving a huge amount of crowd negotiation takes place and in a way, they will be given pakka houses. Then it starts with the lake edge. Various other urban elements have been made and some spatial organization is done in a way things keep moving and taking a pause but tends to create no hindrance to any.

As per the official site of Metro Ahmedabad, it has been announced that the terminal station of metro phase 1 will come right at the Manav talav. and the area around it will be wiped off and can be filled with concrete or they might rejuvenate the lake. Metro coming here is a huge infrastructure and if well thought its relationship with the lake can be made.

Creating a friendly space, by rejuvenating the lake and connecting them by different urban elements to bring urban activities closer to nature, by minimizing concrete force and enhancing the green-covered area. Along with the metro station coming to Thaltej, it will bring more people to the site thus, putting pressure on the space for movement and pauses at that junction. With respect to the context of Thaltej.

Gamtal as the name itself means dwelling around the lake. As water was the main need, settlement began from the places where water as a resource was near, but now in this place, this concept has run off as dwelling around the lake are getting water through water pipelines. Due to this reason, the value of lake being a water resource is lost.

This exercise was trailed by one group exercise. In the group exercise, we were advised to move to Thaltej and get scatter into different areas and see Thaltej. The results which came in the Group exercise were broad, so in the subsequent stage entire site was partitioned into ten patches and every individual was given one fixed patch which they needed to look in more detail. Each fixed patch had its own particular exceptional character.

The character of this place talks about having a comfortable arrangement in the neighborhood. The way it becomes more spacious is what it differentiates it from other patches of Thaltej. But in this spacious character, one can easily find the lack of interaction between the people of that patch within their neighborhood. One reason for it is the building typology over there is “Bungalows”. Where people have their personal lawns.

There was a shift in the site after the individual exercises, as a group decision. The major reason to select this patch was the activities associated with it. This selected area was in the middle of the Thaltej. To the north there are slums to the west there are apartments and bungalows whereas to the east there is a gamtal and south is about the market in reference to the lake. This diversity of land use, seek our attention to study that area and to see how different systems are intertwined.

his site as a whole served lot many potentials and at the same time issues related to it. Above there are three parts of the site shown, which talks about activities taking place at specific points. above this metro station is coming replacing the informal market. People of an informal market are the people of slums. So what happens when this space will change? Should it really change? How will be the urban elements helping out to create a language with the surrounding?

As the metro station is going to be the part of this area huge crowd is expected to visit this place. Now dwellings around this space are at FSI of 1 or 2 but the potential is it can go up to FSI 4.6 adding to it this will be managing huge crowd so what this place can give is harmony in chaos with the relationship of nature, pedestrians, biodiversity and urban components. With the water resource, this place can become a recreational place and can be one of the public place.

Here in the demonstration area minute activities with various urban elements are tried to capture. Such as seating spaces, street lights, access to the lake, seating space inside the lake, access to the pedestrian area, the informal market as such dumping is avoided. if seen space is design in such a way that everything points towards the lake. Also, landscaping is done around the lake so that lake can again be made functional. There are various points that give a human a better experience.
