Streets to Courtyards

When development pushed the poor from prime locations to a corner in a traffic-heavy  Mumbai, creating profitable work opportunities in the same area as they live became imperative. Therefore, to increase potential space to interface with people and create opportunities for work, ‘streets in the air’ are introduced to one side of the building with community courtyards on the other side, both connected to each other directly by a linear staircase. Each community courtyard contains a space which is open for the community to build an institution based on their requirements. It can range from a space to conduct tuition classes and work opportunities or a health care centre and an anganwadi. At a larger level, an upskilling centre is provided which would take up the responsibility of conducting workshops by affiliating with other institutions that could provide them with knowledge to do their work better and encourage ideas for generating income.
