The intent of our project was to develop a new framework for planning in Indian cities. Questioning the current framework in which the Zoning usually takes a prescriptive approach, and in some cases, assigns a specific use for each plot, our attempt was to simplify the zoning ‘structure’ to provide maximum leeway to the market while maintaining the restrictions that were essential for public safety and wellbeing. In a similar manner, we attempted to liberalize the Development Regulations, not to ‘control’ the development, but to let it take the natural course, subject to certain essential restrictions.
