A Mosaic of Wilderness

The Damanganga basin is an ecologically rich belt having abundant biodiversity. The landscape patches along and around the river form a diverse mosaic where nature has the ability to save the river from negative impacts of the community while saving the people from the negative impacts of the river such as flooding. The vision for the project is to preserve and experience wilderness in a river ecosystem by interweaving large and small patches of landscape into a diverse and rich mosaic (a cluster of different ecosystems) where both nature and the community can interact and co-exist.

Landing: 1st impression of the site. The first impression of the site was a sense of longing and adventure, how the shades of green allowed me to see the river in some places while long for it in others.

Grounding: Observe and Record. The Regional and Sub Regional Mapping gave an overall context about the connectivity of site, the landscape archetypes present and the extent of urbanisation.

Grounding: Observe and Record. Vegetation mapping helped in the understanding of the grain on site and through the sections, the edge conditions were studied in detail

Grounding: Observe and Record, A detailed study of quadrants at various points throughout the river where the focus was to study the edge and its elements

Finding: Analysis and Inference,The landscape grain on site was understood through a patch-corridor-mosaic model and observations were made about the different types of vegetation and their patterns

Vision Strategies Plan: Based on the understanding of patches and mosaics, a vision was developed for site which aimed at preserving and experiencing wilderness through a diverse mosaic.

The project focuses on the creation of connection patches between different urban conditions. Modules were created to demonstrate what kind of patches will be required according to their location

Zoomed in Plans and Sections were drafted to explain how public spaces work along with the patches in the mosaic created.

The Vegetation Modules for Different Patches in the Zoomed-in design aim to help understand the experiential quality of the landscape
