Strategic Transportation Plan 2040

This portfolio presents the work undertaken as a part of the Strategic Transportation Plan Studio for Vadodara City (Spring semester 2019). The approach has been to understand the methodology of city level mobility planning along with future scenario building and proposal formulation. Urban block shapers like road network, physical infrastructure, land-use are linked with socioeconomic characteristics of people and their travel behavior. The city of Vadodara has been taken as a case study by the students of master of urban transport systems to analyze the above-mentioned parameters. The existing situation analysis helped in identifying the issues, its source, and linkages with one another. Incomplete road network, poor PT fleet size, and management, congestion during peak hour and inadequate road infrastructure are few important issues identified from the analysis. Chapter I details out the studio framework and literature review of CMP Surat and later gives an introduction to Vadodara in terms of its demography, landuse and economy. Existing issues in the road network are discussed which includes inadequate East West connectivity and poor road infrastructure. The current travel pattern of the city is further discussed in terms of mode share, trip rate, trip length and vehicular ownership. Chapter II showcases the envisaged growth dynamics of the city. Issues of 2019 and future issues if no interventions are made to improve the mobility pattern of the city. Modelling outputs/scenarios of the same travelling pattern using EMME is also presented. It includes projected population and employment, the direction of spatial growth. Also, the vision for the city in terms of its mobility is outlined with specific goals for 2040. Though a range of proposals linked with the vision and concept has been developed, Chapter III focuses on the individual work I undertook on resolving existing road network issues and proposing future network for the envisaged spatial growth. The proposals are divided into three parts. First, the proposals are to improve the east-west connectivity, the second proposal includes improvement in the existing road network and finally new proposed roads to upgrade the existing block size and structure of the network are described. Subsequently, project costing and phasing is also discussed. Chapter IV highlights the learnings from the studio in terms of city level strategic transportation planning. It reflects how the proposals try to resolve the issues of mobility in Vadodara. Lastly, this studio has helped me analyse mobility pattern using planning and urban design tools and techniques. It has enhanced my capabilities in learning soft skills along with a range of software. Also, abilities with respect to proposal formulation, costing, financing, and phasing are key learnings from the studio.
