WE POOL - Car and Bike Sharing

This report details out the work completed as a part of the winter semester studio in 2019. The role of the private sector in mobility has been continuously evolving. Cab aggregators like Uber/Ola, Blah Blah cars, Bounce, and Zomato has transformed the commuting pattern in cities. This report presents the concept of ride-sharing, demand assessment, viability check, implementation and advertisement strategies along with risk management and social and environmental benefits. Globally, shared mobility, particularly ride-sharing, is on an upward inclination, presenting significant growth in all key regions over the past several years. Sharing of ride has seen tremendous growth in past 10 years. In October 2016, car sharing was operating globally in 2,095 cities across 46 different countries, serving 15 million passengers with nearly 157,000 vehicles. This denotes 76% increase in users (passengers) and a 23% rise in vehicles since 2014. Asia accounts for 58% of car sharing users and 43% of the shared car fleet. The number of passengers opting for car sharing has increased from 81,000 to 87 lakhs between 2010 and 2016 and the number of vehicles on this platform has grown from 4,315 to 67,329. (ITS Berkley, “Innovative Mobility: Carsharing Outlook” 2018, https://escholarship.org/uc/item/1mw8n13h ) This studio helped me understand the perspective of the private sector along with the significance of ride-sharing in cities. The concept is to develop an application-based cab aggregator model, where car and bike user can post the details of their trips and seats available, if any potential commuter has similar travel requirements, they can share the same car and it will be beneficial to both the users. Simultaneously, the cab aggregator will be charging a minimal cost for the usage of its service.
