Cities are complex habitat having an extensive system of housing economy and infrastructure. ‘understanding the city studio’ is to understand the city as a complex habitat with diverse perspectives of urban planning and design. The gradual understanding carried out by studying 1 x 1 km area of Nava Vadaj,Ahmedabad in detail, in the context of Indian cities. the study comprised of work based on the different layers of the city like built form and land characteristics, road network, infrastructure, Public spaces etc. and understanding of forces, reasons and determinants behind their forms and activities. It is done by mapping and measuring, engaging with communities through analysis and survey. The study area is located on the west side of the Sabarmati stream in the city of Ahmedabad. The evolution of Nava Vadaj is not older than 50 years. Initially, it was developed as a suburban area but after few years development became fast due to the need for residences. In the precinct Infrastructure and buildings came side by side. Precinct contains major low and middle-income group dominantly. Development of the slum strip on the old railway line, low-income group housing societies, informal economy centres nearby Akhbar Nagar circle are the highlighted features of the precinct.
