Urbanization in non-metropolitan cities

With rapid urbanization taking place in India and all over the world, there is a need for more livable cities with emphasis on lively, vibrant and walkable neighborhoods and ample open spaces for recreation and socialization. A similar concept known as New Urbanism rose in the 1980s which to some extent considered livable urban spaces as a priority in urban design. Rajpura is a non-metropolitan class 1 city according to the census classification. Being a small city, Rajpura is close to being a livable city as it is a 10 minutes city and has a heterogeneously mixed use of land. With the learning and understanding gained from the Understanding the City Studio of CEPT FP foundation program, an attempt has been made to analyze the study area of 1 sq km of Calibre Market, Rajpura following the concept of New Urbanism and study whether it can be considered a livable city or not. All the analysis is based on data collected from primary survey and census 2011.
