Channeling the Unbuilt: A Model for a Sound Public Realm

Located in Eastern Ahmedabad, the Old City is undergoing a process of reinvention, driven by government initiatives aimed at increasing land value through overlay schemes such as the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) policy. However, the scarcity of designated open spaces has left streets as the primary, often last-resort, public realm. This challenge is compounded by building encroachments, which further reduce usable street space and compromise pedestrian safety. In response, these projects aim to reclaim space for pedestrians and foster a more holistic urban experience by enhancing walkability and promoting inclusivity within the public realm.
