Bharuch-Ankleshwar, as many other cities, are a divided urban conglomeration. This urban divide is physically manifested as the result of a stratification of flooded silt amassing for decades on the banks of Narmada and was administered under two separate authorities until as recently as 2012 . Identified primarily as an industrial stronghold in the Indian state of Gujarat, their identities are cultivated around their relationship with this ecosystem.
