Transit - led gamtal transformation

Ahmedabad’s historic gamtals are dense mixed-use urban villages located near major transit corridors. Though naturally transit-oriented in form they lack formal planning integration leading to poor infrastructure and limited open spaces. This project proposes a strategic framework to transform gamtals into inclusive transit-oriented neighborhoods by reclaiming public spaces enhancing connectivity and promoting economic diversification. Streets and chowks will be reimagined as active public realms while multimodal links and last-mile solutions will improve accessibility. Integrating gamtals with city-level public spaces can uplift livability and embed these historic areas as vibrant functional nodes within Ahmedabad’s evolving urban landscape.
