THE DIVERGING CANOPY

The studio is an opportunity to  learn deployable structures and analyzing their mechanisms. It is a combination of both, architectural and structural design. The studio began with exploring deployability in nature. Then we analyzed a deployable household object, helping us the concepts about joineries and mechanisms. We then conducted a market survey of materials, their properties, availability, cost and transportation. We also learnt deployable systems through origami and scissor mechanisms. Our next exercise included studying a deployable structure, understanding it’s joineries, it’s mechanism and the usage of the material, helping us to create our own design concept. The design process for the final project started with a few concept iterations. Then, we created our own deployable system with it’s joinery and working including its scaled physical model fulfilling certain design parameters.
