The IDL & WBD studio focused on improving the overall energy efficiency of a building by applying a combination of passive and active strategies. The learnings of all studio subjects were applied to develop and analyze a daylight and an energy model for a 12-storey healthcare OPD building in Pune, Maharashtra. Ensuring compliance with ECBC 2017, a standard design case was created on which design propositions were incorporated for the building envelope, HVAC systems, and building mode of operation, based on an evaluation of the city’s climate, building’s thermal loads, and cooling requirements. The potential for renewable energy integration was explored through the application of a rooftop solar photovoltaic system. Life-Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) were conducted over the building’s 50-year lifespan to support the proposed design measures. The final optimized design case was developed by selecting the most effective energy efficiency strategies, considering important building performance parameters such as Energy Performance Index (EPI), Unmet hours, HVAC system size, and both Capital and Operational costs.
