Silk Span: Inspired By The Web, Defined By The Pull

Silk Span is a lightweight, tensegrity roof structure inspired by the geometry, efficiency and structural logic of orb weaving spiders. The roof stands on 2 columns with supports only at its edges and tensioned steel cables to form a self-stabilizing framework. A continuous fabric membrane spans the system, drawing from the web’s minimal yet effective use of material. Viewed from above, the roof resembles a spider web; from a key side elevation, it abstractly evokes the form of a spider. The title reflects both the natural inspiration (“web”) and structural principle (“pull”), where tension defines form.
