Tyto-nic is an architectural and structural exploration of a cantilevered steel roof system inspired by the barn owl (Tyto alba). This project was developed as part of a studio focused on designing realizable steel roof structures, combining architectural expression with engineering feasibility. It seeks to reinterpret the owl’s defining qualities—lightness, asymmetrical balance, and quiet strength—into a roof. Through iterative simulations, the project examines bending moments, shear forces, deflection limits, and section efficiency under realistic loading conditions. The challenge was to maintain structural soundness while minimizing material use and preserving the delicate visual intent.
