The first semester of Passive Comfort Lab emphasizes the fundamentals of building physics. We begin with concepts such as heat transfer, climate analysis, solar geometry, and psychrometry. Subsequently, we learn to measure environmental variables and assess conditions to maintain thermal comfort. The course project provides hands-on experience in optimizing the envelope by measuring, quantifying, and evaluating the thermal performance of the prototype. The simulation module aids us in analyzing heat interactions through the building envelope and understanding their impact on cooling loads, ultimately improving the building energy performance.
