Planning for a Family-Friendly Thrissur
India is currently experiencing a demographic dividend, which presents a rare opportunity for its young generation to take the lead in shaping the future. With this advantage, we can establish inclusive and sustainable development that benefits all generations fostering intergenerational and multigenerational progress. Young people will spearhead the creation of family-friendly cities that prioritize security, accessibility, inclusivity, and sustainability for all residents.
This research delves into the analysis of Inclusive and Family-Friendly Parks and Public Spaces within the context of Thrissur city. By creating accessible and secure public spaces, it promotes community cohesiveness, healthy living, and individual and family well-being. The project aims to analyze current play spaces and develop a framework to make Thrissur a more livable and family-friendly city. The ultimate goal is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all residents. The report combines insights from an extensive literature review, case studies on family-friendly cities and public spaces, and a detailed analysis of existing public parks and open spaces in Thrissur. This analysis involved on-site surveys, key stakeholder consultations, and a structured questionnaire survey of local Park users. Factors such as livability, accessibility, inclusivity, safety, transport facilities, and social infrastructure were evaluated to assess the current state of public open spaces and residents' perspectives on family-friendliness in Thrissur. The survey revealed that some wards in Thrissur lacked adequate recreational spaces, and existing ones were poorly maintained, poorly lit at night, and lacked accessibility for individuals with disabilities. Users reported feeling unsafe in public spaces at night due to the absence of sufficient lighting facilities and a lack of traffic signals at road junctions. Furthermore, the absence of public transportation at night and insufficient parking facilities deterred families from visiting recreational areas.
To create a family-friendly city, it is important to prioritize family needs and build safe, accessible, and inclusive public spaces by creating better transportation, and social infrastructure. This includes expanding public transport, building accessible parks, reactivating existing recreational facilities, and investing in nightlife and food districts. Cities can be more welcoming and inclusive by implementing policies that cater to family needs.
