Provincial Urbanity of Dharmaj - Tracing the triggers

The built environment of Dharmaj is enriched with distinct architectural styles that depict influences from several parts of the world. These structures, therefore, become significant as they help to trace the networks of migration, trade, and technological and cultural exchange. The architectural heritage of Dharmaj includes traditional timber structures, the Art deco buildings, and other neo-classical influences. However, the maintenance of these structures is taxing, not only due to the efforts for the upkeep of these buildings but also financially strenuous. Alongside these issues, there is also a need for up-gradation of lifestyle amongst the residents that have translated through the modifications made by these people. The purpose of this research is to highlight the gap caused due to the issues that these residents face while living with ‘heritage’ and its impact on the alteration of the character of the village.
