Contemporary Directions in Architecture

Research Paper

Space can be designed through fundamental attributes of space making ranging from scale and proportion to the relation between built versus open. Among all these attributes the parameter of movement has always been an important factor. This factor includes the perceiver’s experience along with his movement through spaces and covers the experience part of the design. “The traditional architecture of India is a story of movement and pauses where kinesthetics of it is fundamental to its experience and perception.”1 Described by Yatin Pandya in his book “Concepts of space in traditional Indian Architecture” looks forward in the direction of how movement is most critical and how it is achieved. While the modern architecture was based upon the idea of “Form follows Function”, how the aspect of movement through space and its experiential narratives are achieved can become an important factor for one to understand. Being a modern building Indian Institute of management by Louis Kahn demonstrates a dynamic perception of space. This research is an attempt at deciphering IIM, Ahmedabad’s kinesthetics through a lens of parameters defined by Yatin Pandya in his book called “Concepts of space in traditional Indian Architecture”.
