Art Deco Buildings in Dharmaj: Tracing Influences

The thesis attempts to establish the history of the Art Deco Style in Dharmaj, a village in the Charotar Region of present day Gujarat. Dharmaj has a long standing history of transnational migration to the Africa and Europe since the early 20th century. The research primarily analyses the impact and influence that migration would potentially have on the buildings that were built around this time. The research also delves into the dynamics between the British, the Gaekwads, and the Patidars, and tries to examine their socio-political and/or philanthropic role in the urban transformation of the village between 1930s and 1960s.
