A Courtyard Paradise: Expanding Voids for Life

The project "A Courtyard Paradise: Expanding Voids for Life" envisions transforming the inner courtyard of Vienna's historic Winarskyhof—a Red Vienna social housing landmark—into a dynamic hub for community, education, and biodiversity. By creatively reimagining the "negative" space—the air between and above buildings—the design enhances microclimatic conditions, airflow, and natural light while fostering social and environmental integration. Rooted in Vienna's historical evolution from wetlands to urban landscapes, the project blends cultural heritage with contemporary environmental priorities. This revitalized courtyard will celebrate biodiversity and community through social gatherings and educational programs, offering a model for how urban spaces can evolve into vibrant, inclusive ecosystems that harmonize human and natural life.
