The BARI Project

The Upper Bari Doab Canal region is a significant part of history that boosted the development of the agricultural economy as well as the industrial sector in the state of Punjab. The project aims to provide a strategy for the regeneration of an identified cluster of villages along the UBDC Corridor through a research-based study of the area in literature as well as a diagnostic survey of the population. The purpose of the project is also to study the impact on the living culture of the villages due to the Green Revolution. The approach to achieve a plan of action for the cluster is through the correlation of literature and the on-site interview of the residents, culminating in the form of a timeline of events, which can then be used to understand the current changes in the community; socio-economic, cultural and political. The data collected for the study has been encapsulated in the form of inventory forms as well as interviews. The issues of the village have been observed through on-site mapping and photographs. The observations from the study show a lack of connectivity amongst the villages, as well as the nearest town. It also indicates a lack of necessities such as lighting and security in the region. The study also throws light on the depletion of quality of life amongst the residents, as well as a decline in health due to environmental factors. The change in society, and the education of the next generations, however, has provided hope in the form of empowerment, especially for women. The findings of the analysis indicate a need for better amenities in the cluster as well as the identification of skills that can be channelled to promote the culture of the region. It also reveals a self-sufficient community, that can function better with awareness and aid from the immense intergenerational knowledge that the population possesses.
