The land pooling and readjustment mechanism of Gujarat, also known as the Town Planning Scheme mechanism, forms the basis of urban development in large cities in the state. The TP scheme mechanism has evolved as an effective mechanism to translate the objectives of development plans to the ground level. Since 1915, over 900+ TP schemes have been implemented, mainly in Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot and Baroda. The well-planned peripheral growth in these cities is largely credited to the TP scheme mechanism in the state. However, the ecological performance of these schemes in ensuring green and livable habitats has remained under explored. It is in this context of this DRP is positioned to examine the ecological performance of the Town Planning scheme in Ahmedabad and ecological safeguard measures needed for the future schemes, if any.
