Contemporary interior practices need to deal with many issues, other than functional design. Today, one can see the focus shift to the environment, health, and wellness, entertainment, spatial experience, new technology, software, craft and tradition, sustainable materials, etc. The practice of today need not stay confined in an office, as there is the possibility of a multicollaborative approach. This changes the way we visualize the practice, and starting an office today, is different from the past. We see a blurred boundary amongst industrial design, interior design, architecture, and landscape design. There is a rising need to look at the issues concerning the practice of today and juxtapose it with relevant design theories, strategies, and methods. This course aims to expose the students to interior design practices relevant today and intends to address contemporary issues that concern them. Through collaborative presentations and inputs from practitioners, this course builds upon their methodologies, client interfaces, material, and design aesthetics, contemporary trends, and design issues. Through a range of case studies and readings, each student will develop a position paper on any one issue that concerns the interior practice of today.
