Planning Void - Naranpura

The perception of the site relates to the CONJUNCTION and hence attempt was to make the site compliment the feeling; distinct methodology was adapted. Commencing the process by first observing all the elements of the site and its context. Mapping the activities in and around the space taken into consideration and then followed by sensing the space in respect of the smell/odour, visual connection, safety, noises/sounds experienced and so on. The next step adapted was to interpret and understand the site with respect to the elements and feel of the space which are contributing factors for the site to act as an urban void. Since important aspects are observed, it is now needed to categorise them into potential elements and critical elements. The need for this space to be used vitally in the urban context arises the necessity to be well designed and planned. To epitomise, this methodology assists one to observe, understand, and then response efficiently to make urban voids strategic places for urban development.

Mapping Sense of space The site can be categorized as a Planning Void. The site consists of two houses and a vacant land adjacent to the electric tower station. Multiple activities were observed on the site such as grazing of cows and buffalos by the local people living nearby, vendors using the space and unused vehicles seen on the periphery of the site. Divergent activi- ties were discerned on the same piece of land by variant people as per their needs.

Conjunction The sense of avidness arises when the site is first experienced. Further inside, the site seems to be covered with the wild vegetation, but when one proceeds, a trail guides the hidden way through the site covered by trees on either side. The unseen sense of the space is then felt where animals (buffalos, cows) are seen grazing and temporary cattle sheds takes up the rest of the perimeter of the site.
