Dwelling in Motion

Inhabiting arid and semi-arid environments the nomadic pastorals move in search of grazing land for their livestock herds. With cattle, sheep, goats, they migrate over vast distances with seasonal changes and inhabit diverse environments temporarily. The nomadic pastorals use indigenous ancestral knowledge passed to them through generations, to adapt to the changing landscape conditions they inhabit. Impermanence and adaptability define their nomadic lifestyle, creating harmony with the environment.
The studio program positions itself in Junagadh district; Gir Forest, Gujarat, where the nomadic pastoral community known as ‘Maldharis’ with their livestock make themselves home periodically. The central challenge of the studio is to engage in planning the arrangement of routine activities of the ‘Maldharis’ along with designing adaptive and portable shelters for a ‘Maldhari’ family.
